Micro-learning is a type of learning which, as the word suggests, is done in micro passages or small doses of learning units. It makes learning efficient and is not a hustle for you as you do not have to invest plenty of time reading different materials. As lessons have small doses of learning that you can easily comprehend in a short amount of time, it increases the likelihood of knowledge retention. Micro-learning courses are much easier to develop, understand, access, and distribute compared to traditional learning courses.

How does Micro-Learning work?

Human memory has a very short period of paying attention to things and could only hold up to five pieces of information at a time. And if you are provided with ample information at a time it may get lost within some time. Micro-learning focuses on this aspect as you are only provided with small doses of information at a time so it becomes easier for you to handle and learn that information.

Advantages of Micro-Learning

After understanding a bit about micro-learning, you might want to know its advantages as well. Here are some benefits of micro-learning:-

  • It is one of the most effective and credible methods of learning as it functions in a way that we, humans, who can only hold up information provided in small doses can learn more easily and faster.
  • Flexibility is one of the key features of micro-learning. You do not have to suffer by sitting for long hours just to know a specific subject, you could get that knowledge in just a short period. Even if you are working somewhere and don’t have that much time, you could learn using your mobile while commuting to and fro from your workplace.
  • It is easier and faster to deliver the content as it includes simple or narrow topics. Micro-learning is done in short bursts of time, having said that it requires little effort for sessions.

Disadvantages of Micro-Learning

Just like every other thing in the world, micro-learning too has some pitfalls which might help you in understanding it better and can have an in-depth knowledge of it. So, below are some pitfalls or disadvantages of micro-learning: –

  • If you are looking for understanding some of the complex concepts, micro-learning would not be the most recommended and preferable way of doing that. As it provides one with small courses, and it could become a hassle for you also tougher for you to understand complex concepts which might be easier to understand otherwise.
  • You cannot have an in-depth knowledge of any subject you want to. For example- you may learn the English language by having a simple conversation but you cannot understand English literature until and unless you do a proper course for that.

Conclusion

You may find micro-learning better for you for understanding and learning simpler concepts and can prefer traditional or other approaches to learning for complex concepts. You just have to understand what is best for you to choose according to your needs. With some of the pitfalls, it does have various advantages and can be the future of learning.
